1O Keys to enjoying Old Delhi
DON'T GIVE MONEY OR FOOD
This is a always a tough one for folks I lead in Old Delhi, and other parts of New Delhi for that matter. There are a couple of reasons I say don’t give things. First, there are restaurants, and government options that will give our food to the poor every day. Just yesterday I sat with a young man whose family owns Ghareeb Nawas Hotel. He told me how since 1947 his family’s hotel gives out food everyday to the poor.
In my experience, when you offer food, many of the folks when ask you for money.Secondly, I say this because more than once, I have seen people give food or buy a drink for just one child, but then in literally a matter of seconds they are swarmed by no less than 10-20 very, very aggressive kids.I am not saying you cannot be compassionate, but you need to be wise too. It is really hard to tell, but more often than not many of the kids are working for someone else and don’t actually get to keep what you give them.
Again, you can decide how you want to proceed but I would encourage that if you are going to give, do it away from crowds, to those who really seem in need and even do so with the help of an Indian friend or guide, especially if you don’t speak Hindi or Urdu.
