The other day my Indian friend and I were talking about street photography. Among other things, we talked about creating street portraits in India, including of children.
I told him while street photographers in America and other places take pictures of children in public, unless it is done right it can come off looking creepy, strange and even criminal.
We agreed no one in India seems to really care. Often if the kids themselves don't ask for you take their pictures, then a parent, other family member or friend offers them up. I cannot tell you how many times I have been asked to take pictures of random babies!
I have had these experiences in other countries as well such as Indonesia, Ethiopia and South Africa to name a few. I have also had very different experiences.
One time when I was working in Fez, Morocco I had a local guide I was using tell me I could not taking images of people, especially kids, because people there believed I would steal their souls with my cameras.
